OUR NEW YORK STORY

One of the places that was our home away from home in New York was our local neighborhood pizza joint. The place was always welcoming and was always full of people – local workers grabbing lunch, students coming in after school or a family celebrating a special occasion.

What made it a New York pizza place was that on every table, you would see a large family size pizza in the middle that everyone would be grabbing a slice from. You could hear one person say, “The dough is the best part!” Another that would say, “No, it’s the sauce that makes this pizza!” It didn’t matter who was right because everyone was smiling and having a great time. These are memories that we will never forget, and we wanted to be able to share them with people from our new home in Kiel.

Stop by Westside Bar & Pizzeria and share a large New York-style pizza and see whether it’s the dough, the sauce or something else that make our pizza delicious!

The New York-style pizza grew out from the traditional Neapolitan-style pizza when Italian immigrants brought the culinary dish to New York City in the early 1900s. The pizza is large (up to 60cm) with a medium thin crust and is topped with a seasoned tomato-based sauce, mozzarella cheese and different toppings. Each pizza is cut into 8 slices, and customers order by the slice.

The most important characteristics of New York-style pizza are that the crust is foldable yet crispy, and that you always eat the pizza with your hands. No exceptions. You can easily spot a non-New Yorker if you see them eating a slice of pizza with a fork and knife.
